Flouride for Healthier Teeth

Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by making the tooth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth. It also reverses early decay. In children under six years of age, fluoride becomes incorporated into the development of permanent teeth, making it difficult for acids to demineralize the teeth. Fluoride also helps speed remineralization as well as disrupts acid production in already erupted teeth of both children and adults.

When water fluoridation first began in the 1940's, dentists believed that fluoride's main benefit came from ingesting fluoride during the early years of life. This belief held sway for over 40 years. However, it is now acknowledged by dental researchers and according to the Centers for Disease Control, flouride's predominant effect is topical (direct contact with teeth) and not systemic (from ingestion). We in Wichita do not put flouride in our water system. Twice-a-year, at your professional cleaning appointment, high concentration topical flouride varnish provides high concentrations of fluoride applied by your Dental Professional.

Daily, low concentration home fluoride gels or pastes offer prescription strength low concentration flouride, on a daily basis, which is needed to enhance the remineralization process of the tooth enamel. What is remineralization and how does it work?

The process of tooth decay (acid attack) causes demineralization or loss of minerals (mainly calcium) from the tooth surface. With the aid of FLOURIDE, minerals can be re-incorporated back into the lesion through remineralization. Both the DE-mineralization and RE-mineralization processes are continuously ongoing around the tooth. When RE-mineralization overcomes the DE-mineralization process, decay (cavities) can actually be reversed and the lesion repaired. The RE-mineralization process also significantly increases the size of the enamel crystals. These larger crystals are more resistant to acid attack than even natural enamel.

Sealants

Recognized by the American Dental Association as a key means of cavity prevention, dental sealants are simply a thin plastic film that can be applied to teeth.

Usually anyone ages 3 and up.

What is a dental sealant?

It is a thin layer of protective material, placed on a healthy tooth to help prevent decay in deep grooves and pits of natural tooth structure by creating an impenetrable physical barrier for small food particles and cavity-causing bacteria, making them highly effective in preventing tooth surface decay. Sealants can last up to ten years.

How are dental sealants applied?

First, the tooth must be cleaned with a special paste. Then the tooth must be kept dry while a special etching gel is painted in the deep groove. This gel prepares the surface to help the sealant stick. The gel is rinsed off and the tooth is dried again. The white sealant material is applied in a thin layer into the deep grooves on the biting surface. Then a bright curing light is used to harden the dental sealant, setting it in place. Dr. Schuyler checks the sealants to be sure they adhere to the tooth surface, sealing out plaque and bacteria which cause decay.

Will insurance cover sealants?

Most insurance companies do pay a varied percentage of the fee for a sealant. There are often limitations that vary from one plan to another such as age limits, limits on specific teeth covered, and sometimes replacement limitations. The good news is that more insurance companies are beginning to recognize this technique as a valuable preventive measure that will help reduce future dental costs.
